With Wedderburn looking a treat, the North Central Hockey Association Grand Final day got underway with the presentation of Premiership medals to the Wycheproof/Narraport Under 13’s hockey team. Robin McRae from Charlton & District Community Bank-Bendigo Bank was on hand to present the awards to the team.

The Underage teams then took to the field for the first game of the day. Both teams started the game with plenty of run. The uneven surface and the pressure of a Grand Final saw both teams making mistakes in the first 10 minutes. Birchip/Watchem where awarded the first short corner but the shot was too high and disallowed. Boort then had their opportunity but again the shot was considered too high. A great battle was unfolding with both teams battling to have a free shot on goal. With only minutes left in the first half Boort’s Luke Slatter miss-trapped from a short corner pass out but his second effort resulted in a pass to Jordan Verley, who was waiting at the goal post and he slotted Boort’s first home. Boort seemed to be getting on top of Birchip/Watchem. Half-time score Birchip/Watchem 0 –Boort 1.

Boort started the second half with more determination but Birchip/Watchem were trying their hardest to get back into the game. With great skill Joseph Reid worked his way into the goal circle, dragging the goalie out and then scored Birchip/Watchem’s first goal. This lifted the intensity of the game. Boort were working well as a team and holding the ball in their attacking half but were unable to put another score on the board. At full time the score was still at 1 all. Extra time of 5 minutes each end with the first to score deemed the winner. Both teams had their opportunities to score and players were moving the ball from end to end. There was still no score after the first 5 minutes so teams swapped ends and went again. Cramps and tired legs were starting to take its toll and it looked to be going to penalty flicks. There was only a minute left on the clock when Birchip/Watchem fought its way into the goal circle and Olivia Rickard found the back of the net. Final Score: Birchip/Watchem 2 –Boort 1. Goals: Birchip/Watchem- Joseph Reid, Olivia Rickard. Boort- Jordon Verley. Best in Grand Final Female: Chloe Rymer - Birchip/Watchem. Best in Grand Final Male: Rory Grogan – Boort

The Women got underway with St.Arnaud taking on Charlton. Both teams come out hard wanting to get that all important first goal on the board. Both teams had great opportunities but couldn’t calm the nerves enough to make it count. After the intensity of the Underage game the Women went at a slower pace, wanting to make every pass count. Brooke Thompson and Zoe Allcock were working hard for Charlton. The ever reliable Roxanne Egan and Nicola Kirk were defending well for St.Arnaud. Just before half time both Captains were warned about bad tackling. The next bad tackle resulted in a green card 2 minute suspension to Charlton’s Emily Patullo right on half time.

St.Arnaud started the second half strong. They had a number of opportunities with numerous short corners but some strong defending by Kylie Fitzpatrick and Julie Bourke denied them a score. With 18 minutes to go in the game Yelana Jennings controlled a bouncing ball to bet the goalie and score St.Arnaud the first goal of the game. Charlton then continued to put pressure on with some great team play but Nathan Grigg in goals continued to deny Charlton a score. Brylea Swanton was then given a Yellow card 5 minute suspension for a sliding tackle. This created more opportunity for Charlton and 2 short corners were awarded but Charlton couldn’t get it past the strong defence of St.Arnaud. The final whistle sounded with the final score St.Arnaud 1 – Charlton 0. Goal: Yelanda Jennings. Best in Grand Final: Johanna Meagher – St.Arnaud

The last game of the day got underway and the speed, intensity and skill of the Mens hockey was on display. After only 7 minutes, Andrew Bayles put Donald’s first goal on the board. St.Arnaud was then awarded a short corner; two of Donald’s defenders broke before the hit which left only 2 defenders and the goalie to protest the goals. Taking the opportunity to score Thomas Watts scored St.Arnaud’s first. Only a minute later Thomas Watts again show great skill and speed to bet the goalie and put St.Arnaud 1 goal up. Donald was awarded a Penalty Flick for an indiscretion in front of goal. Andrew Bayles stepped up and slotted the flick home. Just before half time Hayden Youngson scored Donald’s 3rd goal. Halftime score Donald 3, St.Arnaud 2.

St.Arnaud started the second have with determination and a scramble for goals resulted in Scott Decker levelling the score with St.Arnaud’s third. The tempo of the game lifted and some desperate mistakes were being made. Numerous players received green or yellow cards, and then when Hayden Youngson of Donald received a second yellow card for the same offense he was given a technical red card. Hayden had to leave the area. This seemed to make Donald more determined and they started to dominate the play. Dwain Dempsey scores Donald’s 4thgoal from a short corner and then Keelan Westerland sealed the deal with the 5th goal. Final score: Donald 5 – St.Arnaud 3

Goals: Donald- Andrew Bayles 2, Hayden Youngson, Dwain Dempsey, Keelan Westerland. St.Arnaud – Thomas Watts 2, Scott Decker

Best in Grand Final: Dwain Dempsey
